How to choose the right size mini split for your space

Picking the right mini-split size is crucial for energy efficiency, comfort, and performance. Too small, and it won’t keep up. Too big, and you’ll waste energy. Here’s how to decide:

✅ Step 1: Measure Your Space

Determine the square footage of the room or area you want to heat and cool:
📏
Formula: Length (ft) × Width (ft) = Square Feet

✅ Step 2: Match with the Right BTU Size

Mini-splits are sized in BTUs (British Thermal Units)—the higher the BTU, the more powerful the system.

Room Size (sq. ft.)

Recommended BTU

Up to 350 sq. ft.

9,000 BTU

350 - 550 sq. ft.

12,000 BTU

550 - 800 sq. ft.

18,000 BTU

800 - 1,200 sq. ft.

24,000 BTU

1,200 - 1,500+ sq. ft.

30,000+ BTU

✅ Step 3: Consider Other Factors

✔️ Ceiling Height: High ceilings may require a larger unit.
✔️
Sun Exposure: Rooms with large windows or direct sunlight might need more BTUs.
✔️
Insulation Quality: Poor insulation? Go one size up to maintain comfort.
✔️
Number of People & Appliances: More heat sources = more cooling power needed.

Where Should You Install a Mini Split? Things to Keep in Mind!

Mini-splits are versatile, but placement matters for efficiency, comfort, and performance. Here’s what to consider when deciding where to install yours:

✅ 1. Room Size & Usage

Are you cooling/heating one room or multiple areas?

Mini-splits are perfect for bedrooms, living rooms, garages, offices, and even basements!

✅ 2. Wall Space & Mounting Height

Install the indoor unit high on the wall (about 6-7 feet up) for even airflow.

✅ 3. Airflow & Obstructions

Avoid placing it behind furniture, curtains, or walls that block airflow.

Make sure the air can circulate freely for maximum efficiency.

✅ 4. Outdoor Unit Placement

Needs a well-ventilated area (not enclosed).

Should be at least 1 foot away from walls for proper airflow.

Recommended to keep it off the ground to prevent dirt or snow buildup.

✅ 5. Noise Considerations

Mini-splits are quiet, but avoid placing the indoor unit right above your bed if you're a light sleeper.

The outdoor unit should be placed where noise won’t disturb your neighbors or your relaxation spots.
